UNION PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
The Echo – February 2010
A NOTE FROM PASTOR KEN
Wednesday February 17th is a significant day in the life of the Christian Church because it is Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the start of the church season known as Lent. Lent is a Latin word that means “spring.” The season of Lent is associated with the spring time. Lent is the period of time forty days before Easter. In the Christian Church, Lent was traditionally the time communicants prepared for membership into the church. In addition, Lent was a time to focus on fasting and repentance. Believers are to explore the nature of the sufferings of Christ and the meaning of discipleship during this church season.
Included in this edition of the Echo is the schedule for our community Lenten services. I am excited to inform you that the Delmont Presbyterian Church will be added to community services. I hope that you will make an effort to attend some or all of these wonderful services of worship.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION REPORT ~ by Donna Doyle
January 2010 began with the children studying about Epiphany and the different customs. We wrapped presents, and the children played a game led by Kayla Oliver. They could choose a present from under the tree when their number was called or “steal” from someone else.
Now we are studying about the church. We talked about the service itself. The high school group went upstairs to the sanctuary and created their own project of counting the number of crosses in the sanctuary...can you believe there are ___ crosses in the sanctuary?
On Friday, January 15, we took down the manger scene, and some stayed after to sled ride. A pizza dinner was enjoyed. On Sunday, January 17, we went bowling at Wildlife Lanes in Lower Burrell, after a lunch of hot dogs, macaroni and cheese and cookies. Our top bowlers were: Men - John Kula 235, Chris Scutt 180, John Dormire 184; Women - Heidi Kenzevich 154, Nora Oswalt 143, Amy Kerfoot 132; Children - Ryan Szalanski 134, Colleen Zilka 102, Nathan Berger & Sammi Zourelias tied with 100. We had a great time!
