The Echo – June 2008

Note from Pastor Ken

The 150th Anniversary Celebration of Union Church will be held on the weekend of June 21 and 22. The celebration will begin on Saturday, June 21 at 3:00 p.m. with a video of the history of Union Church. At 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, there will be a pot luck dinner. The meat will be provided, but you are asked to bring a covered dish. The Sunday worship at 10:00 a.m. will feature former ministers participating in the service, communion and the opportunity to acknowledge our loved ones, who have died, by placing white carnations at the Lord’s Table. Please let the Church Life Committee know of your intentions to acknowledge your parted loved ones with white carnations. Later in the afternoon on Sunday, there will be a catered meal.  The 150th Anniversary Celebration of Union Church will conclude with a special joint choir focusing on the history of music. The selections and theme will be under the leadership of our choir director, Doreen.

The 150th Anniversary Committee and many others have been working diligently to make this a special time for all the members and friends of Union and the community. Please be sure and mark the dates on your calendars and plan on attending.

How Your Leaders are Carrying Out the Mission and Ministry of Union Church

Session voted at its May meeting to hire Adam R.  for the position of Youth Director.  The position will be funded by a fund from The Covenant Funds labeled “Special Projects.”  Adam is a junior at Geneva College majoring in youth work.  He is a skilled guitarist, dedicated to Christ and the Christian faith, has a passion for youth work, and loves to worship.  Adam will be working with youth in grades 7-12.  Hopefully, he will begin in late August.

Session voted to transfer Robert L. to the Cross Roads Presbyterian Church at his request.

Session voted to approve a Children’s Day to be held on Wednesday, June 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The day will feature crafts, a church history lesson, and rehearsal for the 150th Anniversary children’s choir.  A lunch will be served.

The next meeting of session will be a joint meeting with the deacons on June 10 at 7:30 p.m.  Rev. Robert D., Mission Coordinator for Redstone Presbytery, will be the featured speaker.  The topic will  be “Hands on Mission Work.”

Pine Springs Camp Report

We have 19 people attending camp this summer. Thank you for your support. Through  fundraisers, we raised $1,834 this year.  We had 2 luncheons after church and the rummage sale in April.  Please remember all those attending Pine Springs Camp in your prayers.  We trust there will be no broken legs this year! Last year Sami broke her leg! Thank you!~In Christian Love, Donna D.

Christian Education Report

The Sunday school year has gone so quickly.  It seems like only a few months ago we were at the farm filming our Christmas play!  The Bible school program has gone very well.  At 9:30 a.m., the children made their crafts.  They were so serious wanting to get things just right.  The experiments were guided by Dennis and Sandy as teachers. The music was led by Miss Peggy and John.  (It’s amazing how the children learned their songs in such a limited amount of time.) The skits in worship were great.  The Bible lessons and the neat snacks were also  blessings.

I’ve had the privilege of working a lot in the nursery class this year.  It is amazing watching the children maturing from their first class clinging to their loved one into a willing student eager to learn.

On Wednesday, June 11, we will have a Children’s Day at the church.  It will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We will have a Bible story and talk about how worship was 150 years ago when our church came into existence.  We will make crafts, and lunch will be served.  (Hot dogs on the grill, chips and ice cream cones).  Music will be led by Doreen, who will be preparing the children to sing for the 150th Anniversary celebration June 22nd.

Please encourage your children to attend the Children’s Day.  Their songs will be to celebrate the future of Union Church.  ~ In Christ’s Service, Donna. D.

REMINDER:

Worship begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday, 6/1 and will remain at  10 a.m. throughout the summer!
